An evening with Virago / CLOSING RECEPTION with CHAMBER MUSIC

Join artist Lynne Avadenka for the closing reception of her solo exhibition "Intimations" with a very special music performance by an ensemble Virago, on Saturday, November 23 from 7-8:30PM.

Founded in 2018 at the University of Michigan School of Music, Virago is an ensemble that performs contemporary chamber music and free improvisation. They aim to introduce new audiences to the compelling art of free improvisation, and to collaborate with composers with similar missions to create new works for their unique instrumentation.

They are currently working with Detroit-based composer Harriet Steinke to create an evening length, multi-movement composition that incorporates elements of improvisation to be premiered in February 2020.

Committed to educational outreach, Virago has developed a workshop for musicians of all levels which introduces improvisation as a means of gaining instrumental facility, developing active listening skills, and empowering individual creativity.

Detroit Duo The Strange: Voices of the Carousel / MUSIC PERFORMANCE

K.OSS Contemporary Art + Detroit Duo The Strange in conjunction with Eastern Market After Dark are pleased to present “Voices of the Carousel”, a cabaret style music performance by Brent McKay and Erik Nordin.

Voices of the Carousel tells the story of an astronaut (Christopher Strange) trapped on a lonely space station somewhere in the distant future.  While contemplating his life purpose, he begins to hear voices that exploit his self-doubt.   Which voice will Christopher ultimately follow?
This haunting performance combines the surrealism of Moulin Rouge and melodic impressionism of Erik Satie with the blurred edges of Pink Floyd.

Brent McKay and Erik Nordin have been performing together for over a decade.  Their music has been on MTV and national commercials as well as charting nationally on college radio.

Voices of the Carousel was composed and created with a more symphonic approach with Erik on Piano instead of his main instrument drums.   VOTC explores the duos struggle as artists to remain connected to their creative selves.   Much of the music was composed spontaneously being improvised during the recording session. The album is a 17 song concept album which explores various characters living inside of the artists mind. Each is trying to influence the outcome.   Dr. Charles Rains hypnotizes his patient to release these characters.  The live show includes song, stories and audience interaction.

The carousel is the story of our lives, struggling to remember what it was like to be a child, free to explore and be creative.

A sonic response to Larry Cressman’s “Fieldwork” by Zac Bru / MUSIC PERFORMANCE

A sonic response to Larry Cressman’s “Fieldwork” by Zac Bru / MUSIC PERFORMANCE

K.OSS Contemporary Art + Detroit Bureau of Sound are pleased to present a sonic response to Larry Cressman's "Fieldwork" by Zac Bru, a head of Detroit Bureau of Sound + artist talk with Larry Cressman and Zac Bru before the performance.

A most honest communion of sight and sound, linking orderly lines of raspberry twigs to repetitious knockings on wood and drums.

This one-night-only sonic response uses the eyes and ears to observe the individuality and sameness that permeates nature.

A sonic response is a mode of performance specific to Zac’s ‘synaesthesia’, which is a kind of miswiring in the brain where an aspect of one sense triggers another, perhaps a correlation of pitch with color, or musical tone with physical texture. The eyes see patterns of small twigs appearing in separate forms connected by blank space -- the ears translate these visual elements into a network of sharp wooden sounds, low rumbling drums, and the heavenly clanging of windchimes.
13 woodblocks, 3 low drums, 2 hanging windchimes, loops, delay + reverb, amplification

We hope you will join us for this special evening on Thursday November 29th from 7-9PM
